[plug]Sound in X

A question on sound support in linux and in particular in X.

I have just down loaded and am trialling GNOME.  WAV files played within
GNOME whilst running gnome session seem quite tinny and scratchy with a
pronounced spike at the end.  Has any one else found this.
Reproduction from WM although okay never seemed to be as true as when
same files are played  soxplay myfile.wav from console.

Are the the former usual or can it be improved on. I use modular sound
support in RH5.2
