I would really recommend the mod_frontpage method of doing things, it
doesn't have anywhere near the problems of the patched or standard versions.
I would also run a couple of hacker scans - particularly the cgi scans (you
should be doing this anyway :-)) to make sure the permissions are correct.

I understand you position as one of our Perth-based webmasters comes from
Mac and updates the server in Sydney.
