Have you configured the Printer setup from X-Terminal? If not boot up, run
startx, open a Terminal Window activate it, and run SU (password) then type
printoool (return) this will enable you to configure the printer/ printport etc.
Precisely which Epson Printer emulation is appopriate you may need to fudge a
bit, try the simplest one first. Printoold allows you to do a test run anyhow to
see if you have picked an acceptable emulation.  As you said it is probably
something simple, it always is, but indtifying it is something else,
