The default kernel that comes with RedHat 6.0 has support for the zip drive.
I (and several friends) are using it. What type of errors did you get ???

If I where you I'd grab the updates to
kernel*-2.2.5-22.i386.rpm
or even
kernel*-2.2.12-20.i386.rpm
from the RedHat 6.1 disto.
mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/redhat
it may save you reinventing the wheel.
Yours Tony.
