Ummm... I don't think you do recall correctly - I'm pretty sure that
glibc 2.1 is considered a "stable" release (ie, doesn't use the same
versioning system as the kernel). I've been running glibc 2.1.1 (2.1.2
is out now) for quite a while without any problems and distributions
have also been including it in their systems since its release and I
don't think they would do this if it were the development/unstable
tree. If I've got this wrong then someone please correct me.

My experience with Netscape has been that the libc5-linked versions are
much more stable than the libc6 ones (although I've heard people report
the opposite so YMMV) so I use these - I don't blame this in any way on
libc6 since Netscape appears to be the only thing which has trouble with
it, and Netscape doesn't exactly have a reputation for being
rock-solid...

Regards,

Christian.

Perhaps I am flogging a straw herring in mid-stream, but in the light
of what is known about the ubiquity of security vulnerabilities, it
seems vastly too dangerous for university folks to run with their heads
in the sand.
