I have programmed a bit with 3 different GUI's ( Amiga , Xwindows and MS
Windows)
They all seemed quite similar - all GUI's share a number of features in
common
bassicly an event driven software is the typical way.

X is designed to be able to use over a netwrk though. When used on same
machine it uses shared
memory techniques so it runs extremly fast and efficiently.

The book i learnt x windows from is called X window applications
programming
it's quite old now though and ide strongly suggest that unless you want
sometyhing really tricky
you can save alot of time by not using x system cals and go for a
higher level
C++ library ie GTK or Qt, lestif or motif or similar.
