The font server's my candidate. I had the problem recently, it went away 
on reboot. Since yous didn't in may not be
	/var/lock/subsys/xfs

You might also find something in lost+found in the root directory of your 
/usr partition.

I suspect a file's gone missing; force-installing xfs is likely to clear 
the problem.
