In /etc/mgetty/login.config you need something like this:

 /AutoPPP/ -     a_ppp   /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login

Your /etc/ppp/options should look something like this (YMMV):

 asyncmap 0
 auth
 crtscts
 lock
 modem
 proxyarp
