Speaking of silly mistakes..
append="hdd=none, svgatextmode=100x37x8_SVGA, masq=on"
Works under all up to 2.2.12

append="hdd=none svgatextmode=100x37x8_SVGA masq=on"
works under 2.2.12

go figure.. I have always used commas to seperate the entries..
Dunno where I picked it up, but it worked up to 2.2.12
