Now that you mention it, I had a problem with an S3, that I 'Solved'
by switching to a different X_Server..
I was using the S3 Server from memory, and I THINK, I switched to the
Generic SVGA Server, and the problem went away..
Also, you could try downloading the latest XFree Server and compile it
up.
I Had to do that for one machine I have with a strange video config,
that
the default servers supplied with Debian don't support.. It's pretty
easy.
I eventually swapped the crappy S3 I had (It was one of those $45
Cheapies)
for a Matrox and completely solved all my display problems..
