For a single user 10 GB, you might try:

* root partiton. Basic tools, config, spool. 250MB
      (For a server or multi-user /var or /var/spool would be separate)

* /usr  - 3GB?  Can be mounted read-only, no need for backups.

* swap - say 128MB ? Err on the generous side.

* leave a few GB free for future allocation? 10GB is a lot.

* the rest for /home, for all your own stuff, mp3s, porn, warez, etc.


The basic idea is to separate standard system stuff from personal.
You know about boot issues, i guess?
