How about creating a user bradley, with src and bin directories? The tools
will be
available to the user as well as root, and you're protected against some of
the more
embarassing mistakes (which I for one have made from time to time).

Can't help you there I'm afraid -- my GUI development experience is limited
to web
applications using HTML and a browser.
