[plug] Scripting for email

Hi,
I have little experience with scripting but I am guessing that
the next couple of things I will describe should not be too hard
to do with perl or bash scripts.
I want to be able to tell if a user has not checked their email
for a certain period of time, let's say 24 hours. I suppose that
a script could be written that would compare the date the file in
/var/spool/mail/ was last modified and then send an email to me
to let me know if it is more than 24 hours from "now" ago. Would
this be the best way to do this, and if so could someone give me
some pointers on what shell commands etc. would be useful.
The next script would be a lot more difficult...perhaps. I have
a user that gets his email forwarded to another account that he
accesses at home. This user is subscribed to a mailing list,
using his work account, with a reasonable amount of traffic per
day and does not want that traffic going to his home account
because it means he spends a lot of time downloading messages he
only needs at work. Is it possible to get only the mail that is
NOT from the mailing list forwarded to his home account ?
Thanks in advance,
Brad
