Just run the above on a Linux box and well ... it worked. But I am not
really sure how to evaluate how "secure" it is. I tried some very polite
probes across the LAN (ftp, telnet, NMAP etc) which where unsuccessful
but I am sure a "black hat" would not be so friendly.

Taking computer security to this level is very new to me and I would
appreciate any guidelines on how to test the box for vulnerabilities.
