I often use the day, month and year functions in Excel and then collate them
as text.  That way you can control the format of the date string that is
exported to the text file.

eg.
Col A
31/3/97 (Excel Date Format)

Col B
=DAY(A1)&"/"&MONTH(A1)&"/"&YEAR(A1)
Displays as 31/3/1997 as a text string that will export into the "txt"
format without problems.
