Thanks Colin for the suggestion re- exporting Excel cells as text.

For interest, while working with that idea I hit upon the idea of 
validation.  Sure enough, Excel supports validation and auditing with a 
glaringly-obvious red circle graphic around non-conforming 
cells.  Configure to validate date columns as numeric with value != 0.  Set 
that up and seems to work well.  Have provided that as interim solution to 
the client.  Will continue to explore gnumeric, Delphi and so on 
alternatives as time permits.
