Thanks for the feedback David. Don't think it's the tape heads or dud tape
(new drive, cleaned regularly and newish tape), but your comments did make
me look more closely at the tape side of things. (I had been assuming the
probs were a continuation of bus timeouts/resets that have been plaguing
this system for a while under the 2.2.14 kernel.)

Looking at the tape archives, it may have been something as simple as the
tape running out - looks like bru using the nrtape device behaves
differently under linux than it does under IRIX and has been appending
archives when I thought it was writing at the start of the tape.

By the way, the exabyte is an 8 mm tape system.
