I am not a Suse user but the first one usually means set the environment
variable hwprobe to equal '-modem' and then run yast2. If the above line
doesn't work verbatim try
export hwprobe=-modem; yast2
if you are using bash (echo $SHELL)
or 
setenv hwprobe '-modem'; yast2
if you are running a csh derivative (csh/tcsh)
