Mike,
there seem to be plenty of good replies so far. But you may wish to
consider using a mobile-phone to send an SMS message. Its easy to
send an AT-command over a serial cable to do that. Especially good for
alarm systems, as there is no phone-cable that can be cut.
  Its simpler than modem, chat, SMTP.   (forget ppp!!!)
