Have you tried tcpdump?  You should see which type of packets are causing
problems (if there are any).  Typical syntax would be "tcpdump -i ppp0"
(without quotes).  I generally use "tcpdump -qpi device" which gives
slightly less verbose output and doesn't put the device in promiscuous mode
(whatever that means).
