Okay ... Use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a console.
Login as root
---
edit /etc/inittab
change the line from
id:5:initdefault:
to
id:3:initdefault:
---
That will tell the machin to NOT start X at boot.
tehen run telinit 3 to switch to runlevel 3 ... this will shutdown X and some
other unneeded apps and leave you with anice console machine.

As to "correct" I dont' knwo BUT it will work.
