I've never actually had this problem so I'm not familiar with the error
messages given, but are you giving the corret root filesystem to LILO?
If you're running a 2.2 kernel then I'm not sure you'll need to pass the
geometry to the kernel on boot... I recently set up a machine with a
13GB disk (as one large partition) and it was 8GB-limited when using
Debian 2.0 packages (and a 2.0 kernel) but doing the install with a 2.2
kernel and then remaking the filesystem with upgraded Debian tools
(mke2fs and cfdisk) completely solved the problem.

Christian.
