Edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add the line

deb http://security.debian.org/ stable updates

and run apt-get update at least once a day through cron, and you'll always
have the latest security fixes.

Then subscribe to debian-security, and you'll know of any known
vulnerabilities, even if there is no fixed package yet.
