BIND = Berkeley Internet Name Daemon (I think, something similar
anyway). named is just a generic name for a 'name daemon' in the same
spirit as ftpd, httpd etc. Because BIND is by far the most popular name
server (at least on Unix), BIND is almost synomymous with 'named'. I
haven't used dents or dnscache (other name servers) but I wouldn't be
surprised if they called themselves 'named' too which would probably be
quite legitimate.

The BIND executable is called 'named'.
