Yeah, I plugged it in and it worked, just like any other modem :)

Which implies a problem with the init string, rather than the Operating
System.  - you'd get the same error typing that init string under windows.

That's because modems (note that I don't consider "WinModems" modems)
don't care what OS they're plugged into.

If the modem follows the normal AT Command set, Linux will use it.
