telnet is ye olde original, while the Berkley effort add utilities such as
rsh, rlogin and rcp.
  They are broadly equivalent. You will see different features in the man
pages. But newer rlogin has kerberos authentication, instead of just
plaintext. Peole here tend to recommend ssh though, rather than either, if
security is an issue at all.

  I dont know what Mumps is, but maybe your problem is that neither telnet
nor rlogin give a totally transparent connection. If you send the right
escape sequence (easier in telnet with ^]) it will break the connection.
