[plug] difference between rlogin and telnet?

Hi "Everyone", I realize I probably don't thank you all often enough for all of the help and information you provide. (there's so much to DO these days!)

So, Thanks, each and every one, for the brain power and assistance. (I'm so often told by corporate types that 'linux isn't supported', or 'freeware isn't supported'. Little do they know. :) )

Here's something I realized I need to understand better: what is the difference between rlogin and telnet? Different protocols? Different configs?

The reason I ask is this: today, while connected to a unix site via modem, a transmission of data was failing.

We were modem'd into box1, and rlogin'd to box2, where we were using (god forgive us) Mumps code to transmit code to site.

When I changed the connection from box1 to box2 to a telnet connection, the tranmit went smoothly.

I realize, this may have nothing to do with rlogin vs telnet, maybe it was the code and that 'try it again later' effect. But I realized I don't understand the differences between the two methods of connection.

I am google.com'd out today, just tired of fruitless searches for my exact question's answer.

Anybody want to give a short tutorial on the topic?

always grateful,
Tamara
