You are attempting to be a member of an NT domain?

Have you set:

security = domain
workgroup = <your workgroup>
password server = <list of PDC and BDCs you want to use> or
password server = *

You have run:
smbpasswd -j <your domain> -r <your PDC>

succesfully.
