The default gateway is correctly in place, but even if it wasn't, I should
still be able to ping the other end of the link because a static route
exists for that.  I can't even do that.

Thanks, but it didn't... :-(  Could even be a hardware problem I guess
(although the modem establishes a terminal connection with no
probs.)
