Ctrl-Alt-F1 should get you back to a console. Then log in and go to run
level 3.

Next, type 'startx >& log.log' and when the flicking starts, type
Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down the X server.

Then go and look in the log file to see if any modelines were OK, or if
there are any errors.

You may need to check the X config file /etc/X11/XF86Config.
