I have had a similar problem for a while, but weirder.  Print jobs
*sometimes* get through, sometimes don't.  If it doesn't print and you
try again, typically it works the second time.  I added a logging line
to the print command (which was otherwise "lpr -b -P%p %s &") in
smb.conf which indicated that print jobs *are* getting that far,
however they don't go any further.  An NT server with the same name
sharing the same printer does not have this problem.  It almost seems
like it's running out of resources or something, but is wouldn't be
because load average is 0.00 0.00 0.00 and there is heaps of spool
space.  I'm not really expecting anyone to know the answer but just on
the off-chance that it rings a bell for someone I thought I'd post
this experience...

I had handled that issue differently.  I had "force-user" and
"force-group" set to "lp" and "daemon" in smb.conf (those are the lp
user and group on my system).  I guess that would probably be a
marginally more secure way of dealing with the problem.

PS. I just looked in /var/spool/lpd/kyocera (which is the spool
directory for the printer) and found out there are 4295 spool files in
there.  Whoa!  I think this is an unrelated issue though, I just
needed a "-r" in my print command.
