Your "sleeping linux" problem is a little like a problem I have when doing
tape backups onto a remote machine sometimes.  The remote system seems to
"freeze" and needs a key pressed on the keyboard to get things going again.
I can avoid the problem by running 'top' in one of the virtual terminals.

I suspect it is either an APM or a 'kernel cleaning' thing (highly technical
terms, I know).  In any case 'top' fixes it for me, so I have never chased
it up.
