Well we did manage to get win98 to install without having to remove
the wipe the linux partition(s) but the answer was not obvious so Im
sending us all the info.

The trick was to exit the install program and get to a dos prompt.
Then we 1) fdisk (it's on the win98 cd) reboot, exit setup to
dos prompt again. 2) format the partition with the "format" on the
win98 cd and reboot. Exit the setup to dos prompt again, and here
comes the tricky bit, mkdir c:\temp and start setup with "setup
/T:c:\temp". Now setup knows that it can use the partition and
doesnt need to remove all files from the disk.
