Did you quit out of minicom (without dropping the link - <ctrl-a><Q>) and
then tell the local pppd to talk to the serial port? (pppd /dev/ttySn)
not much point starting pppd both ends if they are not talking to each
other.

You need to tell it which serial port to talk to
you need to specify "defaultroute"

basically use what is written in DialModem, just leave out the "connect"
and chat script part.

That's because you need to modify your chat script to suit. It is not
starting pppd on the remote end.
