What you need to do is find a machine with the applicable
kernel source (not the target machine) and build yourself
a kernel.

Then you need mount the boot floppy (is a MS-DOS format)
and replace the old kernel with your newly built kernel
[/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/<filename>] while retaing
 the old filename.

Most distributions (both Debian & RedHat) use Peter
Alvins boot loader which works on a MS-DOS formated floppy
and a small config script.
