a few questions that may help.
does the drive go back to the home position ( nearest the spin motor), and does
the laser initialize, ie does the monitor LED come on , and a focus search
start. if not the fault could be in the control logic or the motor/
focus-tracking coil drive . if it does a focus search try positioning a mirror
above the laser lense and see if the spin motor starts. if it fails to start
locate the rf amp/ servo ic and see if you can find any data on it. it should
have a focus OK ( FOK) pin that should change state when a reflection is
detected. If it doesnt change state it is usually the laser , but can also be
the ic.
