My Debian /etc/lprng/lpd.conf file also has ever line commented out
although I'm using a remote printer on this machine.  I realise this
probably doesn't help but just thought I'd add it to what you currently
know about the situation. :)

BTW, when you type 'lpq', what exactly is displayed?  Also, maybe you
could post your printcap file?
