Thanks. *grin, roll of eyes*

It would be good if someone who does have a working printer connected to a
Debian machine (using lprng) could confirm that an "empty"
/etc/lprng/lpd.conf doesn't seem to matter?

Exactly? Ahem *drum roll*. Nothing. It "hangs" just as lpr does.

The last few lines of output from lpq -D1 look like this:

[ earlier stuff stripped... ]
2001-04-23-13:28:03.767 stan [2701] lpq funky: Send_request: security <NULL>
2001-04-23-13:28:03.770 stan [2701] lpq funky: Send_request: command '^Dfunky'
2001-04-23-13:28:03.803 stan [2701] lpq funky: Send_request: socket 3, real host 'localhost'
2001-04-23-13:28:03.808 stan [2701] lpq funky: Read_status_info: output 1, timeout 30, dspfmt 4
2001-04-23-13:28:03.811 stan [2701] lpq funky: Read_status_info: status_line_count 1
[ ctrl-C here, as you can probably guess ]
2001-04-23-13:28:14.980 stan [2701] lpq funky: cleanup_INT: signal Interrupt, Errorcode 0
2001-04-23-13:28:14.983 stan [2701] lpq funky: cleanup: done, exit(0)

Okay, 'tis attached. The 'raw1' printer seems to be something that
apsfilterconfig likes to add. I don't know why. I don't think it should
matter though.

Oh, and I should mention that the appropriate spool dir _does_ exist:

root at stan 13:28 ttypts/2 ~ !187 # ll /var/spool/lpd/funky
total 0
-rw------- 1 daemon lp 0 Apr 23 02:47 acct
-rw------- 1 daemon lp 0 Apr 23 03:44 control.funky
-rw------- 1 daemon lp 0 Apr 23 02:47 lock
-rw------- 1 daemon lp 0 Apr 23 02:47 log
-rw------- 1 daemon lp 0 Apr 23 02:48 status
-rw------- 1 daemon lp 0 Apr 23 02:48 status.funky
