Does it have a cd-rom drive and do you have a bootable linux CD? (usually
the 1st debian cd is bootable and you can use it as a 'rescue' disk)
Alternately you could test the kernel by making a boot floppy with lilo or
grub on it, that loads the new kernel off the HD?
