Good choice... I made a mistake and went to Debian to start with... and had

I have a feeling there is something wrong with your automount... that is..
assuming that Mandrake 8 has automount... 7.2 did have you tried opening an
x-term and typing 'mount /mnt/cdrom/' or 'mount /mnt/cdrom2/'   ?

the CDROMs are /dev/hdc1 and /dev/hdc2?

well.... some of us can manage to crash a linux box... but it's hard to do.
nothing ssh or telnet can't fix remotely :o)
