Adrian,

It really depends on which Linux distribution you're using.  On Debian you 
have /etc/init.d, /etc/rc0.d, /etc/rc1.d, etc.  On Redhat you have 
/etc/rc.d/init.d, /etc/rc.d/rc0.d, etc.

Are you perhapos using Debian?
