Ummm.../etc/init.d/ is kinda important, all the files in your runlevel dir's
(/etc/rcx) are actually sim-links back to the actual scripts in this
(/etc/init.d/) directory.
Try:
ls -al /etc/rc3.d/
or
ls -al /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/
Depending on your distro.
you will see something like this (except more):
------------
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Aug 13 03:17 S90crond ->
../init.d/crond
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Aug 12 23:36 S91smb ->
../init.d/smb
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Aug 12 20:58 S98portsentry ->
../init.d/portsentry
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Aug 13 03:16 S99local ->
../rc.local
------------
Nathan.
