Unless you are using 2.4 and initrd images, in which case you should
edit /etc/mkinitrd/modules, add the name of the module, regenerate
the initrd, and reboot. You don't have to have a custom kernel; initrd
gives you this flexability. Ref: my RAID howto: packaged kernel, doing
raid and reiserfs on root...
man mkinitrd(1), and see /usr/share/doc/initrd-tools/*.
