Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it does indeed sound like this
drive is on it's last legs. (Either that, or it's a drive that is
incompatible with Linux and/or your IDE bus.  I seem to see this problem
a lot on even brand-new seagates)

Backup your data while you still can!

Then send the drive back for warranty...

3-5 year warranties on most drives, no?

(except for the really cheap ones)
