Thanks but found the whole...  the lookup file in /var/named/ had a line
that mysteriously went...

can you grab the info in /var/log/messages after doing a
service named restart (the same as  /etc/rc.cd/init.d/named restart only
shorter to type)

Also the contents of /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/named.conf or
/etc/named.boot

What version of bind is it ??
