Do you know which port the modem is on? The equivalents of COM1, COM2,
etc. in DOS/Windows are called /dev/ttyS0 /dev/ttyS1 etc., respectively.
If you aren't sure just try each one from /dev/ttyS0, through to
/dev/ttyS3 until one works.

If it still doesn't, the Linux Modem HOWTO should prove a valuable guide
for it. It's most probably under /usr/doc/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.txt or
something similar.

Which linux distribution are you using?

If it's an external modem then you should have the least of troubles :)
