I would add into this in second place downloading the .src.rpm if it is
available and then doing a rpm --rebuild blah.src.rpm which should
compile a binary rpm with dependencies based on your system. When it has
finished successfully compiling you should be left with a binary rpm for
your system in /usr/src/RPM/RPMS (You may have to check the permissions
of the /usr/src/RPM tree to see whether you can write as a user rather
than root)
This way you stay within the RPM packaging system and have a proper rpm
that you can install and uninstall as you see fit... And using a src rpm
takes a lot of the hassle of compiling away if you don't feel like
configuring and building a source tree manually...
