Hi Plug, my apologies: I'm about reveal my huge ignorance of e-mail systems -
So you'll see where I'm coming from:
1) qmail-based anti-SPAM system
I have read about TMDA, a newly released version 0.22 - A qmail-based
anti-SPAM system
http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2001-07-07-002-21-OS-SW
http://tmda.sourceforge.net/
From my understanding it works on a Blacklist ``Allow everything that is
not explicitly denied'' and a Whitelist ``Deny everything that is not
explicitly allowed''. Those that are not on either list are sent a time
restricted response allowing just one reply to another e-mail address. The
idea is that the required human intervention should cut out most spammers.
2)~'newbie' Q on MTAs bouncing mail
I don't have my own domain and I want to keep my old e-mail account @iinet,
but kiss goodbye to spam.
I believe I can set up a Mail Transfer Agent (as above) on Linux to
download the mail and let an e-mail client access it over a local network -
Question: Can e-mail then be bounced just as effectively as if it were on
the ISP's system?
Normally I read my iinet mail from a Telstra connection - would this
create a problem because I could not use the regular iinet outgoing mail
address unless connected directly to their network?
(iinet would probably not be keen on installing TMDA on their system for me
and allowing me to edit my own files!)
Thanks,
Daniel.
