Richard,
"pine" is an MUA, which also can connect to a remote SMTP server to send
mail. However, it does not have a built-in feature to download mail, which
is widely considered a Good Thing.
  The short answer is, "see fetchmail". That program will download your
mail from the net to your own PC.
