[plug] Access to the internet problem

I setup my kppp to dial out and connect to the ISP.  All that works fine, 
except I cannot ping, or nslookup any website.
Kmail will not find the ISP mail server.
I do a netstat -i and can see the ppp0 connection is up and running.

If I then enter the "/sbin/route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 dev ppp0"
The route table looks like this:

Then I can access the internet.
Did I miss something in my initial setup?  I never had to do that with 
previous linux installations.
I am running Linux localhost.localdomain 2.4.2-2 #1 Sun Apr 8 20:41:30 EDT 
2001 i686 unknown
